Next-generation USB interface: Intel to release high-speed transmission connector next year
2021-09-29 16:46
Intel, a semiconductor chip manufacturer, will release a new Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt interface with an extremely high transfer speed of up to 40Gbps. Compared to the current Falcon Ridge Thunderbolt chip, Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt boasts double the bandwidth, representing a significant improvement over USB 3.0. While offering faster transfer speeds, Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt demonstrates significantly reduced power consumption, consuming only 50% of the current model's energy.
Intel's new connector is expected to launch next year. Alpine Ridge will have four models: TBT, DP 1.2, USB 3.0, and LSPCon-based HDMI 2.0. Alpine Ridge supports PCI-e gen3 and comes in two SKUs: a daisy-chain dual-port connector and an LP single-port connector.
The final design of the connector is yet to be determined, but it will feature 100W system charging, higher bandwidth, a smaller form factor, and backward compatibility.
Additionally, reports suggest that Alpine Ridge will support two simultaneous 4K displays while providing system charging functionality.
